Failed bomber gets death sentence

AMMAN, Jordan, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- A military court in Jordan handed down a death sentence to a failed suicide bomber convicted of involvement in attacks that killed 60 people.

Iraqi Sajida al-Rishawi was sentenced to death by hanging Wednesday for the Nov. 9, 2005, attacks on three Amman hotels, The Times of London reported Friday. Six other defendants tried in absentia were given the same sentence.

Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the now-deceased former leader of al-Qaida in Iraq, had claimed responsibility for the attacks. Charges brought against him were dropped after he was killed in a U.S. airstrike in June.

The chief judge in the case said those responsible for the 2005 attacks "must be uprooted from society."

Hussein Masri, al-Rishawi's lawyer, said the outcome was expected.

"The verdict against my client was expected because neither the suspect, nor her family nor the party that put her in this position, was able to provide me with any supporting evidence to boost my position," he said.

Masri said he plans to file an appeal.
