HARTFORD, Conn., Aug. 23 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut earned a spot on the November ballot with a newly created party in his bid to hold on to his seat.
The Connecticut secretary of the state said Wednesday Lieberman submitted 18,000 signatures, more than twice the 7,500 needed to participate in the election, the Norwich (Conn.) Bulletin reports.
The certification means Lieberman -- the Democratic nominee for vice president in 2000 and a presidential candidate in 2004 -- will seek re-election under the "Connecticut for Lieberman" party in a three-way race against Democrat Ned Lamont and Republican Alan Schlesinger.
Lamont defeated the three-term Lieberman by 10,000 votes in the Aug. 8 primary to win the Democratic nomination.
