Jewelry stolen from State Hermitage Museum

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia, July 31 (UPI) -- More than 200 jewelry items have disappeared from Russia's State Hermitage Museum, one of the largest and oldest cultural museums in the world.

A spokesman for the museum said Monday the enamel jewelry was probably stolen, the Russian Information Agency Novosti reports.

The pieces had been kept in storage. The apparently theft turned up during a regular inspection, the spokesman said.

No value has been placed on the missing pieces.

The museum will issue an official statement on Tuesday, the news service said.

The vast Hermitage collections include an assortment of famous Faberge jewelry.
