Sniper fire on Indiana highway kills 1

SEYMOUR, Ind., July 23 (UPI) -- Indiana State Police investigated four sniper shootings on interstate highways Sunday that left one person dead and another wounded.

The victims were passengers in separate pickup trucks that were hit shortly after midnight on Interstate 65 near Seymour, Ind., about 40 miles south of Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Star reported.

The wounded victim was hospitalized with injuries that were not life threatening, police said.

A preliminary investigation showed the sniper fire came from either the roadway or an overpass, police said. About 14 miles of I-65 were closed to traffic for more than eight hours after the shootings.

Police were also trying determine if those shootings were related to shots fired at a semitrailer and an unattended vehicle on Interstate 69 near Muncie, Ind., about two hours later. No one was injured in those shootings.

"We're calling all of our available manpower we have out to scour the interstates," police spokesman Sgt. Jerry D. Goodin said.
