Florida sex offender kills teen, self

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla., July 16 (UPI) -- A registered sex offender shot and killed a 17-year-old girl he had been harassing in Port St. Lucie, Fla., and then killed himself, police say.

Scott David Uslan, 42, had been stalking Brittany Carleo for several months, the Palm Beach (Fla.) Post reports. She previously dated Uslan's son.

Police said they did not have probable cause to arrest Carleo -- a sex offender once convicted of providing obscene material to a minor -- until Wednesday, after he started making harassing phone calls to the teen.

Uslan posted bond and was released from jail Thursday. He entered a smoothie shop where Carleo worked around 9:15 a.m. Saturday, police said. An employee of a donut shop next door said she saw him holding a gun to Carleo's head.

Uslan and Carleo were dead when police arrived, police spokesman Robert Vega said. Police fired no shots.

Carleo's family reacted with anguish and anger, saying the crime could have been prevented, had the criminal justice system not failed, the newspaper said.
