Teachers fired over headscarves

BRUSSELS, July 12 (UPI) -- Two public school teachers in Brussels have been fired for wearing Islamic headscarves.

Expatica said the Muslim teachers were fired after they failed to heed a warning against the practice.

Jacky Goris, director of the Brussels school group, denied allegations of discrimination, Expatica said.

Brussels Education Minister Guy Vanhengel says teachers should not wear noticeable religious symbols. Flemish Education Minister Frank Vandenbroucke said schools should individually decide whether they would allow a headscarf or not, the news service said.
