Kofi Annan blamed in critical U.N. report

WASHINGTON, June 3 (UPI) -- Two Washington lawyers hired by the United Nations to investigate internal problems say Secretary-General Kofi Annan ignored problems they outlined.

Jerome Ackerman and John Vanderstar said their investigation of former U.N. Undersecretary General Dileep Nair found he violated rules on promotions and they were stonewalled by the Office of Internal Oversight, which Nair oversaw.

Nair, who was accused of promoting people outside U.N. rules and maybe taking bribes to do so, now works for the Malaysian government, Fox News reports.

Annan has said the case is closed and wrote an apology letter to Nair over what he called "unnecessary and unmerited public innuendo."

But the attorneys say their report outlined Nair's actual violations and his office refused to hand over documents, computer records and conduct interviews.
