Spate of deadly bombings sweeps Iraq

BAGHDAD, May 29 (UPI) -- A series of bombings were reported throughout Iraq Monday, with at least 26 civilian fatalities and an unknown number of U.S. military casualties.

The U.S. military did not immediately provide casualty information about an attack on a convoy in central Baghdad in which a Humvee was destroyed by a roadside bomb, CNN reported.

Seven people in a minibus died from a bomb in northern Baghdad, while three others died and five others were injured in a blast targeting a police patrol near the German Embassy, police said.

In the western part of the city, three policemen died in a shooting ambush, the report said.

About 50 miles north of Baghdad on a road between the towns of Khalis and Adhaim, the Diyala Joint Coordination Center reported a bomb hit a bus carrying 40 laborers. Officials said 10 people died instantly and 12 others were badly injured.

To the south of Baghdad, Hilla police reported four mortar rounds had fallen into the town of Iskandariya, wounding 10 civilians.
