UAE diplomat abducted in Iraq

BAGHDAD, May 19 (UPI) -- The abduction of a United Arab Emirates diplomat in Iraq apparently shows the insurgents are not willing to spare even their country's leading benefactors.

Until now, UAE diplomats in Iraq, with ties to the Sunnis in Iraq, had helped secure the release of other kidnapped victims, reports the Middle East Times.

"There is no country in the world that helps Iraq like the UAE does," Adnan Al Pachachi, a member of the Iraqi Parliament, was quoted as saying.

The report said Iraqi gunmen kidnapped Naji Rashid Al Nuaimi, 28, on Wednesday after killing his Sudanese driver as the two were leaving another diplomat's home in Baghdad.

UAE officials said they have not heard from the abductors, but said they are relying on Abu Dhabi's close ties with Iraq's Sunni leaders to secure Nuaimi's release, the report said.

Some Iraqi leaders think gangsters interested in ransom might have carried off the kidnapping.
