Florida having a tax-free hurricane sale

OAKLAND PARK, Fla., May 19 (UPI) -- Florida's 12-day sales-tax holiday for hurricane preparation begins Sunday, when residents get to buy needed supplies without the tax burden.

The tax holiday, which will continue until June 1, is anticipated to save Florida residents $41 million. That's the start of the summer hurricane season, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.

Hurricane Wilma caught many residents unprepared. Brad Tischer of Oakland Park is a diabetic in need of insulin shots. He stood in line for hours to buy ice to keep his medication from going bad, so he plans to buy a generator.

Home Depot in Davie has about 400 generators for sale and expects more delivered before the holiday's through.

Battery packs and flashlights are going quickly at the Wal-Mart Supercenter too.

Joann Christian and her mother went without power for three weeks last year. On Thursday, they put a generator on lay-away at Wal-Mart. As long as they finish paying for it by June 1, they can still buy it tax-free.
