Child dies, boy burned in trailer fire

ATLANTA, May 13 (UPI) -- An 8-year-old girl died and an 11-year-old boy was injured when a mobile home they were in caught fire Saturday morning in Coweta County, Ga.

The fire engulfed the home in a trailer park shortly after 3 a.m., said Jay Jones, deputy chief of Coweta County Fire & Rescue, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Jones said fire trucks arrived at the scene within five minutes of the emergency call, only to find the home "fully involved" in flames.

Firefighters found the 11-year-old outside the home with burns on his face and arms. He had burned himself trying to save the 8-year-old trapped inside.

A 9-year-old girl, who had run to neighbors for help, was uninjured.

Jones said the mobile home was an older model from the 1970s and "it had little or no fire protection." There were no smoke detectors, he said.

The fire seemed to have been caused by some electrical malfunction, Jones said.

Coweta County Sheriff's deputies are investigating why the three children were left alone.
