Most in U.S. think U.N. can't handle Iran

PRINCETON, N.J., May 10 (UPI) -- A new USA Today/Gallup poll finds most U.S. citizens don't think the United Nations can solve the growing Iranian nuclear dispute.

Most are also against U.S. military action against Iran.

Pollsters surveyed 1,011 adults between April 28-30 and found only five percent of U.S. citizens are "very" confident in the United Nations, 28 percent "somewhat" confident and 67 percent either "not too" or "not at all" confident the international body will resolve the nuclear standoff.

Iran is being pressed to end its uranium enrichment program. Tehran insists it is for domestic energy purposes. The United States is leading a growing coalition calling the program a potential nuclear weapons threat.

Fifty-seven percent of those polled said they opposed U.S. military action against Iran if it doesn't end its nuclear program.

Thirty-six percent did support such action and 6 percent didn't have an opinion.

The poll had a 95 percent confidence level and a plus or minus 3 percent sampling error.
