Gov. Jeb Bush angered by boot camp death

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., May 10 (UPI) -- Florida Gov. Jeb Bush has called for the firing of a boot camp supervisor in light of an autopsy that showed a 14-year-old boy there died of suffocation.

Martin Anderson died Jan. 5 at Bay Medical Center in Panama City. The Anderson family attorney said former boot camp supervisor, Capt. Mike Thompson, told boy's parents the youth collapsed while running laps.

An autopsy indicated the boy died of complications of sickle cell anemia, The Miami Herald reported. However, the attorney said Thompson made no mention of the seven guards who beat and choked their son, and then tried to resuscitate him with ammonia capsules.

A second autopsy came up with a different result, the newspaper said.

"Martin Anderson's death was caused by suffocation due to the actions of the guards at the boot camp," the second examiner wrote.

After learning of that on Friday, Bush wrote the Bay County sheriff with a demand for Thompson's dismissal.

The Bay County boot camp was closed April 6 and none of those under investigation for Martin's death work for the sheriff's office any longer, the newspaper said.
