Chef writes book for canine gourmets

ROME, May 6 (UPI) -- An Italian chef has taken a break from his work at a Michelin-recognized restaurant to write a cookbook for dogs.

More accurately, the book is for dog owners or, to use the term that Bruno Barbieri prefers, dog friends.

"Mangiare da Cani" or "Eat Like a Dog" encourages the use of fresh food in season and includes special treats for birthdays and Christmas.

Barbieri, the chef at Villa del Quar, a hotel near Verona, told The Times of London the recipes have been tested on his pooch, a schnauzer named Alima.

The chef believes in treating dogs well, which means not feeding them food that is bad for their health. Salt, mushrooms and parsley are among the ingredients the dogs are spared.

Dr. Giuseppe Rovere, a veterinary surgeon who served as an adviser on the book, said owners should not feed dogs desserts because that will make them fat.

"Salt doesn't make food more appetizing for dogs, it gives them high blood pressure," Rovere said.
