CARACAS, Venezuela, May 3 (UPI) -- More than 100 prisoners have died in Venezuelan prisons so far this year, while another 224 were injured, a non-government organization said Wednesday.
Humberto Prado, head of the Observatory of Prisons, said that 40 inmates were killed in April alone, bringing the total this year to 114.

Last year, 314 prisoners were killed while another 517 were injured in prison violence, El Universal reported.
In March, the Venezuelan government announced a multimillion-dollar project to "humanize" the prison conditions in the country.
