Friendly fire suspected in troops' deaths

KABUL, Afghanistan, April 5 (UPI) -- An attack on a U.S.-led coalition base in Afghanistan will be investigated to find if any of the casualties resulted from friendly fire, the coalition says.

A statement by the U.S.-led command in Kabul said a joint U.S.-Canadian-Afghan team will carry out a probe into the March 29 attack at the base in the southern Helmand province.

The incident resulted in the death of one Canadian and one U.S. soldier. One U.S. soldier and three Canadians were also wounded, the BBC reported Tuesday.

The report stated, "The investigation will determine all the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether any of the casualties may have resulted from friendly fire."

The report said that after reviewing the reports of enemy contact it was decided that an investigation was warranted.

U.S. forces have suffered several friendly fire casualties in Afghanistan since ousting the Taliban in 2001. In 2004 former NFL football player turned soldier Pat Tillman was killed by friendly fire when his patrol was hit by gunfire in Khost province.
