Fmr. Chicago priest charged with kid porn

CHICAGO, March 22 (UPI) -- Federal authorities have charged a former Chicago priest and hospital chaplain with downloading child pornography on his personal computer.

Father Daniel Schulte, 56, was charged with one count of possession of child pornography, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Schulte served as chaplain at St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates until he was removed last year. He has since been moved to St. Louis where the Rev. Raymond VanDorpe, assistant provincial of the Midwest Province of the Congregation of the Mission, said Schulte could be monitored.

VanDorpe said it was the first charge of sexual misconduct against Schulte, who was ordained in the Vincentian order in 1987.

Barbara Dorris of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests said church officials should have gone public with the federal investigation when they learned about it last year.
