Teen shot dead for stepping on man's lawn

BATAVIA, Ohio, March 21 (UPI) -- An Ohio senior citizen was being held on murder charges Tuesday after telling 911 dispatchers he shot a teenager for walking on his lawn.

Charles Martin, 66, called 911 Sunday and told dispatchers "I just killed a kid," and went on to say "I shot him with a (word deleted) .410 shotgun twice. He's laying in the yard."

The victim was Larry Mugrage, 15, who was a neighbor of Martin in Batavia, about 30 miles east of Cincinnati.

Martin, a retired Ford Motor Co. worker, reportedly told investigators the victim, his parents and other youths had been harassing him for five years.

He was arraigned Monday in Clermont County (Ohio) Municipal Court. Judge James Shriver ordered him held without bond pending a Thursday hearing, the Cincinnati Enquirer said Tuesday.

Assistant Clermont County Prosecutor Mark Tekulve had requested Martin be held without bond, calling the shooting "essentially a premeditated act" that was both "cruel" and "cowardly."
