Man added to 'Most Wanted Terrorists' list

BUFFALO, N.Y., Feb. 26 (UPI) -- A former Lackawanna, N.Y., man, an alleged associate of the terrorist cell the Lackawanna Six, has been placed on the FBI's "Most Wanted Terrorists" list.

Jaber A. Elbaneh has become the 26th man on the agency's Most Wanted Terrorists list, which is headed by al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, the Buffalo (N.Y.) News reported.

Federal law enforcement officials say they believe Elbaneh is one of the 23 criminal suspects who escaped Feb. 3 from a prison in Yemen.

"The fact that (Elbaneh) has been placed on this list is an indication that he is considered to be a dangerous individual," said Buffalo FBI spokesman Paul M. Moskal. "He's an individual who has not only associated with al-Qaida, but has taken part in a prison breakout with al-Qaida."

The Yemeni was a former worker at a Buffalo cheese factory and has many relatives in Lackawanna, N.Y., police said.

He was criminally charged with being one of the organizers of the Lackawanna Six cell, who trained at an al-Qaida training camp several months before Sept. 11, 2001.

In 2003, the U.S. State Department issued a reward of up to $5 million for Elbaneh's capture, the News said.
