Iran newspaper solicits Holocaust cartoons

TEHRAN, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- An Iranian newspaper says it plans a cartoon contest in reaction to cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed, but these are for cartoons of the Holocaust.

Farid Mortazawi, editor of Hamshahri, said that the competition is an international one, Ynet News reported.

"Western newspapers published these caricatures (of the prophet), which constitute desecration, under the pretense of freedom of expression," he said. "Let's see if they mean what they say once we publish Holocaust caricatures."

The Mohammed cartoons first ran in the Danish newspaper Jyllens Posten several months ago. They were recently reprinted in newspapers in a number of European countries, and an editor in Lebanon, who was fired almost immediately, ran three of them.

The editor of Jyllens Posten has said that he first decided to solicit caricatures of Mohammed after the author of a children's book complained of not being able to find pictures of him. Muslims consider depictions of Mohammed sacrilegious.
