Poll: Dems in Congress up, so is Bush

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Jan. 14 (UPI) -- A Harris Poll finds if the election for Congress were held today, 43 percent of voters prefer Democratic candidates and 34 percent prefer Republicans.

The poll found 14 percent would vote for someone else and 9 percent are undecided.

The telephone poll of 1,003 U.S. adults surveyed from Jan. 6 to 9 also found that there is currently a significant gender gap, with 48 percent of women strongly supporting the Democratic candidate and 34 percent supporting the Republican candidate. Thirty-seven percent of men would support the Democratic candidate and 34 percent would support the Republican candidate.

The poll also finds that President George W. Bush's job approval ratings have rebounded to 43 percent positive and 56 percent negative -- up from his November ratings of 34 percent positive, 65 percent negative.

The poll has a sampling error of plus/minus 3 percentage points of the entire U.S. adult population.
