NATO: No mideast detainees at Kosovo camp

BRUSSELS, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- NATO officials say all detainees held at Camp Bondsteel in Kosovo were from the area, not from mideast countries.

NATO Spokesman James Appathurai told the BBC no detainees from Iraq or Afghanistan have been in the facility, which now holds no inmates.

The Council of Europe urged the alliance to allow inspectors into the camp.

"If there is nothing to hide, the Council of Europe Committee for the Prevention of Torture should be given immediate and unlimited access," said the group's chairman, Terry Davis.

The council has access to all United Nations camps in Kosovo but has so far failed to get an agreement with NATO.
