Stowaways allegedly forced to jump ship

DURBAN, South Africa, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- Two Ukrainian sailors, who allegedly forced seven Tanzanian stowaways to jump ship, have been accused of murder in South Africa.

The incident occurred in the port of Durban, where five alleged stowaways managed to swim to shore, reports the BBC. The other two are believed to have drowned and authorities are searching for the bodies.

The seven are believed to have boarded the South America-bound ship in Mombassa, Kenya. They apparently hid in pipes and South African police say they were weak after going without food for some time.

The Ukrainians were expected to be charged on two counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder.
