Tourists killed climbing Kilimanjaro

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- At least three climbers died and five others were seriously injured while attempting to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, an official said.

News24 South Africa reported Thursday that the victims include foreign tourists who were climbing Africa's highest peak Wednesday and several others from their group were believed to be trapped on the mountain, according to the official and another source.

"There was an accident while they were scaling the mountain," said Richard Bigurube, director general of the Tanzania National Park Authority. "According to the reports I have, three people died, five have sustained severe injuries and several others have minor wounds."

A source in Tanzania's commercial capital of Dar es Salaam said two of the three dead were European tourists and that the third was a Tanzanian porter hired by the group.
