Train derails in Thailand, no casualties

BANGKOK, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- A high-speed train traveling from Thailand's northern resort area of Chiang Mai to Bangkok derailed Monday, stopping rail services but causing no casualties.

Three cars ran off the rails but did not overturn, the Thai newspaper The Nation reported. All 300 passengers aboard the train were safe.

The incident took place near the railway station in Pitsanulok, the report said.

Railway officials closed train services on the northern route.

Technicians said some of the rails were broken, and they estimated a delay of eight to ten hours before services could be resumed.

Chiang Mai is a resort area popular with foreign tourists.
