Syria blamed in U.N. assassination report

NEW YORK, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- A new United Nations report on the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri reportedly details Syria's alleged role in the slaying.

The report sent to Secretary General Kofi Annan is based on investigator Detlev Mehlis's team questioning of five Syrian government officials, the BBC said.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad again vowed he would punish any Syrian involved in the murder plot. At the same time, the Syrian government has denied any involvement in the car bombing that killed Hariri in February.

An earlier U.N. report in December implicated Syrian officials. Mehlis has indicated the new report will confirm the findings of the first report and include more concrete evidence, the BBC reported.
