UN: Aid needed fast for quake victims

NEW YORK, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- United Nations disaster experts warn earmarking aid to earthquake-devastated parts of Kashmir for long-term recovery could condemn thousands to death.

"We remind donors that with winter fast approaching and life-saving resources scarce, tens of thousands of earthquake survivors face death, hunger and disease as well as prolonged displacement and homelessness," the group said in a statement.

"Serious outbreaks of acute diarrhea and disease highlight the need for increased efforts to provide safe water and sanitation in makeshift camps, and to ensure access to health services for vulnerable populations."

Other countries have pledged to donate $5.4 billion in aid. But the U.N. group said the money must come promptly and with as few strings attached as possible.

The death toll from the earthquake is about 74,000 so far, mostly in Pakistani-controlled Kashmir. The quake also affected Indian-controlled Kashmir, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
