Army unit probes Northern Ireland deaths

LONDON, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Some British soldiers who served in Northern Ireland could face criminal charges after a review of 2,000 "unresolved deaths," the Sunday Telegraph said.

A new unit, the 6 Royal Military Police Historic Investigation Team, is involved in reviewing the deaths and tracing soldiers involved. Those who could face prosecution will be warned and given information on available legal support.

Northern Ireland Secretary Peter Hain said recently members of the IRA and loyalist paramilitary groups suspected of crimes who have managed to escape capture would be given amnesty While they might be tried, they would be released on license and would not be required to be present in court.

The prospect of a long investigation into Army activities during the 30-year civil war in Northern Ireland worries many senior military officers.

"This is the most appalling betrayal of every British soldier who did his duty during the Troubles against a very treacherous enemy," said Patrick Mercer, the Conservative Party's shadow defense minister.
