George Mason U. gets $10 million gift

FAIRFAX, Va., Oct. 29 (UPI) -- George Mason University plans to become a premier school for technology students after a $10 million donation.

The Washington Post reports the funding was announced Friday during a 20th anniversary celebration of the university's School of Information Technology and Engineering.

The money was donated by Ernst and Sara Volgenau. Ernst was the founder and still serves as chairman of technology services company SRA International Inc.

That money plus a planned $10 million additional fundraising campaign is why university President Alan Merten said the school will soon have an international and local reputation "as the place where the best and brightest students are produced."

SRA began in 1978 out of Volgenau's basement.

It began taking on big clients like the Defense Department and had a $103.5 billion initial public offering.
