Boeing apologizes for Osprey ad

WASHINGTON, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- The Boeing Co. has apologized for an ad that shows the CV-22 or Osprey delivering U.S. troops to a mosque surrounded by fire.

The ad's headline read: "It descends from the heavens. Ironically it unleashes hell."

Executives for Boeing and Bell Helicopter called a halt to the ad campaign after it appeared in Air Force Magazine and Armed Forces Journal, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. The ad ran a third time, in the National Journal, because of a clerical error.

Ibrahim Hooper, a spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said he feared ads like the one for the Osprey could spark vandalism at mosques.

"Any time you have American troops rappelling to a house of worship, it's going to raise some red flags, and at this time of crisis to have American troops attacking a mosque that's clearly labeled as a mosque, it just sends a very negative message," Hooper said.
