NYPD studies militant Islamic ideology

NEW YORK, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- Streetwise New York City police officers are being schooled in militant Islamic ideology to better understand terrorist threats.

"These radical groups use Islam to recruit and motivate; now we will have a better understanding of the types of ideology that lead to violence and militancy," Deputy Commissioner for Counterterrorism Michael Sheehan told the New York Daily News.

"It comes from a long tradition, and now they're evolving and morphing them into new organizations that are instigating violence," he said. "The ideologies are here in New York."

Daniel Rudder, an Ivy League-educated "intelligence research specialist," gave his first seminar last week on "The Evolution of Militant Sunni Ideology."

In addition to giving lectures, Rudder is one of eight analysts hired by the New York City police who pore over research and intelligence gleaned from confidential informants, interrogations and surveillance of criminal suspects, and brief officers on their research
