Soccer referee linked to gambling

RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- A Brazilian soccer referee has been accused of accepting bribes from gambling interests to fix games, O Globo reported Monday.

Edilson Pereira de Carvalho was said to have fixed nearly a dozen games for up to $6,000 a match.

Carvalho has been suspended pending the outcome of a police investigation. Another referee from a lower Brazilian league has also been accused of accepting money from gamblers.

If he is found guilty, the games refereed by Carvalho will likely be played over, said Brazilian soccer officials.
