Iran leader's U.N. speech anticipated

UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- World leaders are waiting to hear what offers the Iranian president will make in his U.N. speech Saturday as controversy over its nuclear program builds.

President Bush and some European leaders are urging the International Atomic Energy Agency to refer Iran to the U.N. Security Council for possible sanctions over its suspected nuclear weapons program, The New York Times reports.

The move is going slowly though, as key members of the world community, specifically Russia and India, have all publicly opposed the Security Council route and are urging diplomatic talks to continue.

The White House is getting frustrated and was hoping this week's summit at the United Nations would have been more fruitful.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is to give a speech to the U.N. General Assembly Saturday and is expected to touch on the nuclear subject.

The next move by the United States and Europe will depend on what offers Ahmadinejad makes in his speech.
