Suspended sentence for racial slur

DERBY, England, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- A British daycare worker received a suspended sentence for writing a racial epithet on the forehead of a child she cared for.

Fay Stockley appeared jubilant that she was spared a prison term, giving a V sign as she left the court, The Sun reported. She was convicted last month of racially aggravated assault.

"You've been convicted of a wicked thing," the judge, John Aucott, told her. "You demonstrated the clearest hostility to this girl by writing the word 'n*gger.' This child was brought up in a climate of neglect, hostility and racial abuse. You simply continued the abuse."

But Aucott agreed with Stockley's lawyer that she was too ignorant to understand what she had done.

In statements to police, Stockley admitted writing the word but said at various times that it was a private game between her and the child or that it should have been "Tigger" because they had been reading "Winnie the Pooh."
