Scottish cop on trial for rape

GLASGOW, Scotland, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- A Scottish police officer is on trial, charged with raping three women and sexually assaulting six others.

An Irvine woman testified Friday that Dean Stewart of the Strathclyde Police came to her house with a female police officer last year to question her about harassing telephone calls she had allegedly made, The Scotsman reported. She said he returned alone the next day and raped her.

Stewart admits having sex with the woman but says it was consensual.

The woman broke down several times on the witness stand and called Stewart "a nasty evil dirty man." Under cross-examination, she acknowledged that within a few hours of the alleged rape she sent someone a text message saying she "let a male cop have sex" and told a number of other people, including a reporter and the local prosecutor, that she was not raped.

Stewart faces three charges of rape and 10 of sexual assault, all in Ayrshire, southwest of Glasgow. He allegedly told two women they were under arrest before assaulting them.
