British Quakers rebuff Islamist group

LONDON, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Quakers in London have canceled a hall booking by an Islamist group that disguised itself as a Latin American dance organization.

A fundamentalist group known as Hizb-ut-Tahrir, targeted by British Prime Minister Tony Blair as a terrorist movement, booked the Friends Meeting House in central London for some 1,000 people for a meeting on Sunday.

The booking was made under the name "Salsa Bill Publishing House," but Quaker officials became aware of the organizers, and canceled the booking, The Times of London said.

"We are a pacifist movement and any group which books with us is expected to follow our guidelines," a Quaker spokeswoman said.

The group describes itself as a non-violent political party seeking to establish an Islamic state.

The fee for the hall was about $2,700, and speakers would have addressed the audience on the "unholy alliance" between Western and Arab governments, the newspaper said.
