Jogger finds and drinks lye-doctored beer

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I., Aug. 30 (UPI) -- A Rhode Island man who found an eight-pack of beer while he was jogging was poisoned with lye when he drank one of the bottles.

Michael Darigan told investigators that he discovered the beer, a full pack of stubbies, a month ago, the Providence Journal reported. On Aug. 21, he drank one of the two remaining bottles and became very sick.

The last one Darigan drank had been filled with a caustic substance.

Darigan told police that he found the beer in the South Shore Management Area, state-owned land that is partly leased to farmers.

Darigan's family complains that he might have been in better shape if staff at South County Hospital had paid more attention to him. His daughter, Kimberly, told the newspaper that his father was told to go outside to throw up -- something the hospital denies -- and was not examined for an hour after his arrival.

Darigan brought the bottle with him, but hospital staffers threw most of the contents down a drain, police said.
