London muggings up as cops hunt terrorists

LONDON, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- With London police zeroing in on terrorist activity, muggings are reported up 23 percent in the past month.

New figures show street robberies rose from 2,869 in July of last year to 3,524 for the same month in 2005, the Times of London said Thursday.

The sharp rise is most pronounced in some of the suburban areas that have provided extra uniformed officers for the special terrorist duty. In Waltham Forest in northeast London, for example, the number of robberies rose by 92 percent from 110 to 217.

The figures also revealed a 13 percent increase in gun crime and a 9 percent increase in violent crime.

About 1,000 detectives have been involved in the hunt for the network behind the July transit bombings. Scotland Yard also has contributed up to 4,500 officers to the high-visibility patrols on the public transport networks.
