Australian doctor charged with abortion

SYDNEY, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- An Australian doctor is on trial for allegedly inducing an abortion without finding whether the pregnant woman would be harmed by continuing the pregnancy.

Dr. Suman Sood allegedly administered a drug to the 20-year-old woman that induced labor. The woman gave birth at home to a baby boy who lived for three hours, the Sydney Morning Herald reports. She is the first person to be charged with abortion in New South Wales in more than 30 years.

The woman did not realize she was pregnant until she was well into the second trimester. She said that she decided to have an abortion because she did not think she could support a baby and that several clinics turned her down.

She told the court that Sood gave her two pills, having her swallow one and putting the other in her vagina.
