Brain-dead Va. woman gives birth, dies

ARLINGTON, Va., Aug. 3 (UPI) -- The Virginia woman who gave birth months after a tumor left her brain dead has been removed from life-support and died, hospital officials said.

One day after Susan Torres, 26, gave birth to a 1-pound, 13-ounce girl, her husband told doctors to remove life-support equipment that had been keeping the woman alive since she collapsed May 7. She was pronounced dead Wednesday afternoon.

The woman's daughter, named Susan Anne Catherine Torres, is doing well, family members said.

After Susan Torres collapsed, doctors told her husband that cancer had caused her brain to stop functioning. They decided to keep her on life-support and try to save the 15-week-old fetus the woman was carrying. Even then, doctors told The Washington Post, it was a race against cancer affecting Torres' vital organs and the fetus reaching viability.

The family issued a statement thanking the public for the support shown for the Torreses, who also have a 2-year-old son.

More than $400,000 has been donated from around the world for Torres' medical bills through the Web site susantorresfund.org.
