Report: Iran leader opposed embassy taking

TEHRAN, July 30 (UPI) -- Iranian President-elect Mahmoud Ahmadinejad reportedly opposed the 1979 occupation of the U.S. embassy in Tehran when he was on a student council board.

Mohsen Mirdamadi, one of the students who were on the board, said Ahmadinejad who represented the University of Science and Industry did not play any role in the raid and occupation of the embassy by the students.

"I remember we had a meeting of the board to decide on whether to invade the U.S. embassy following the victory of the Islamic revolution, and two students opposed the idea, one of them was Ahmadinejad," Mirdamadi was quoted as saying Saturday by the Iranian News Agency, IRNA.

Following Ahmadinejad's sweeping victory in elections last month, the U.S. administration said he was one of the student leaders who led and participated in the occupation and hostage taking of the U.S. embassy in Tehran in 1979.
