Dagestan blast kills one, injures four

MAKHACHKALA, Russia, July 24 (UPI) -- One person was killed and four wounded when a bomb exploded on a commuter train in the Russian republic of Dagestan early Sunday.

Police said the explosive, which was apparently placed under the locomotive, appeared homemade, the Russian news agency Novosti reported.

The explosion was equivalent to 11 kilograms--just over 24 pounds--of TNT, and considerably damaged the rail tracks. A transport officer is reportedly among the injured.

There was no mention of suspects in the report, but Dagestan borders Chechnya, where Muslim fighters have been struggling for independence.
