Another poll published in Sunday's Le Journal du Dimanche newspaper found 49 percent of French looked favorably on their prime minister, a 5 percent jump in a month.

France's former foreign and interior minister, de Villepin was appointed to head the center-right government during a Cabinet reshuffle following the failed May referendum on the European constitution.

He has vowed to make employment a top priority, and promised to deliver results during his first 100 days in office.

Thursday's poll, by the Ipsos-Le Point polling agency, also found 32 percent of French approved of French President Jacques Chirac, a 5-point hike from June.
