Bridge falls on garbage truck, driver dies

COQUITLAM, British Columbia, July 20 (UPI) -- A driver of a Coquitlam, British Columbia, garbage truck was crushed when his truck's box struck a pedestrian bridge, sending it crashing on the cab.

The unidentified 36-year-old man was inching forward in slow-moving traffic in the suburban area east of Vancouver midday Tuesday when the accident happened.

"The dump truck portion apparently went up and drove into the walkway and this collapsed on the dump truck," Royal Canadian Mounted Police Cpl. Jane Baptista told Global TV News.

Police rushed to drape blue tarpaulins over the cab's wreckage, and cranes were summoned to remove the 110-foot bridge.

No one was walking on the bridge at the time.

An RCMP officer headed to the scene on a motorcycle was injured when a pickup truck made a U-turn in front of him. He was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
