Spain: Lead terror suspect transferred

MADRID, July 19 (UPI) -- The leading suspect in Spain's trial of alleged Sept. 11, 2001, accomplices was transferred to a new prison after being beaten at his old one.

Imad Eddin Barakat Yarkas -- the lead suspect in the trial of 24 men accused of aiding the Sept. 11 hijackers -- was beaten in prison Friday by fellow prisoners and had to be hospitalized, El Pais reported online.

He is reportedly being kept in isolation to avoid a repeat of what happened in his other facility.

Yarkas maintains his is innocent of the charges, as do several other defendants in the trial's closing statements earlier this month.

He and others face tens of thousands of years in prison for their alleged involvement in the Sept. 11 attacks. The men on trial are accused of aiding the terrorists who ultimately hijacked planes and flew them into New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
