OAXACA, Mexico, July 15 (UPI) -- Two federal agents are accused of trying to extort millions of dollars from the slain brother of former Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari.
The state attorney general in charge of the inquiry, Alfonso Navarrete Prida, told reporters that at least four other federal agents were under investigation and that as many as eight other people were being investigated for involvement in the suspected extortion plot, The New York Times said Friday.
The police say the effort may have gone awry and ended in the killing of the former president's brother, Enrique Salinas de Gortari
At the time of his death, he was being sought by the French police for questioning.
Carlos Salinas de Gortari was president from 1988-94 and remains a major power broker in the Institutional Revolutionary Party.
