Court fines France for fish infractions

PARIS, July 12 (UPI) -- The European Court of Justice fined France a hefty $24 million Tuesday for violating legislation to protect the region's endangered fisheries stocks.

In addition, Paris must pay another $70 million for every six-month period of violation in the future, the Luxembourg-based court announced.

France was similarly denounced in 1991 for breaking fish protection laws.

Inspectors found the country was marketing fish below size regulations, and was not controlling ports for possible fisheries violations.
