Israel, U.S. to sign MOU on arms sales

TEL AVIV, Israel, June 24 (UPI) -- Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz will visit the United States to conclude a memorandum of understanding on security exports to countries such as China.

The Yediot Aharonot newspaper said that U.S. Defense Department officials criticized Israel's Defense Ministry for having the same people sell arms and supervise those deals.

Moreover, the Defense Ministry owns some arms industries.

The two countries discussed also the export of electronic gadgets and chemical products that could be used for civilian purposes but also for advanced, destructive weapons systems.

The sides agreed Israel would amend its legislation and increase supervision of such exports, the newspaper said.

The differences arose when the United States criticized the sale of Israeli made Harpy drones to China, and Beijing sent back some parts for "maintenance." Mofaz recently told the Ha'aretz newspaper they were not upgraded.

Yediot Aharonot said that the Israelis had told the Pentagon that their exports to China have dropped in the past two years to $2 million on old maintenance jobs.
