Iranian women scale Mount Everest

KATMANDU, Nepal, May 31 (UPI) -- A team of Iranian climbers, including two women, scaled Mount Everest and planted their national flag on the summit Monday.

Graphic designer Farkhondeh Sadegh, 36, and dentist Loleh Keshavarz, 26, are the first Muslim women ever to climb the 8,848-meter (29,000-foot) peak.

The team arrived at the world's highest peak on Monday after conditions improved, following several days of bad weather.

The Iranian expedition included 21 members, 12 of whom made it to the summit, including four Sherpas from Nepal who served as guides and porters, the Indo-Asian News Service reported.
