Landslides kill 10 in northeast India

KOHIMA, India, May 26 (UPI) -- At least 10 people are feared dead and hundreds of houses damaged as massive landslides hit the northeast Indian state of Nagaland Thursday.

The landslides hit the central town of Mokukchung early Thursday morning, after torrential rains had fallen throughout the night, the BBC reported.

The local chief district administrator said the landslides occurred in three places in and around the hills, including business and residential areas.

Six bodies have been recovered so far and at least four more have been spotted. The death toll could rise because several people are still missing.

Incessant rains were hampering rescue work as local police and military forces used bulldozers and other earth-moving equipment to clear the debris in the areas affected by the landslides.

India's northeastern states have been subject to torrential rains over the past three days. The same rains have also caused flash floods in neighboring Bangladesh, as water from hillsides in the states of Meghalaya and Assam flowed into the Sylhet region of Bangladesh.
